Niagara Falls, Canada Good to Know

Jillian Scribs

General - Niagara Falls is in Canada and New York state, with the Niagara River acting as the border. The Rainbow Bridge allows you to drive between the 2 sides. You will need to go through customs each way. You will need a passport or special Driver's License.

Language - English is official language.

Crime - Average. I never felt uncomfortable but always use common sense.

Money - Canadian Dollar, check exchange rate but a Canadian Dollar is about $0.75 USD. Credit cards are widely accepted.

Hint: Before you travel make sure you use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. There are a lot of them out there. Those can add up fast.

Water - Safe to drink.

Electricity -

  • Type A is the same as the US, it's the one that has the 2 flat pins.

  • Type B also same as in the US but it has the grounding pin.

 Tipping - Restaurants typically 15-20%. Bartenders = $1 a drink.

Bathrooms - Same as US.

Driving - Similar to US but instead of MPH, it's km/h (kilometers). Know how to change your car before you cross the border.
